Digital Video Formats
Mpeg 2: A format that gives high quality, high data rate files. Supporting PAL/NTSC standards. Currently this format requires specific software or a hardware card fitted to your computer.
Mpeg 1: A format aimed at desktop applications, this gives good quality 25fps video at low data rates. It has a standard resolution of 352x288 pixels but can be viewed full screen without much loss of quality. It can be played back with software on both Mac and PC platforms.
Quicktime: As well as audio and video, Apple's comprehensive multimedia architecture can support text, still images, metadata, 3D and VR Media and URL links.
Through its use of many compression types or "Codecs" (software which translates audio and video between its compressed and uncompressed forms), video can be delivered anywhere between high data rate broadcast quality large screen resolutions and very low data rate small screen internet applications.
Quicktime files can be downloaded or streamed from an internet hosting server. A streaming file can be played through an internet connection in real time, eliminating any lengthy download time. These online movies can have multiple quality versions embedded, allowing access to users with different connection speeds.
Quicktime's own software is required to play back these files.
